The word gymnasium derives from the Greek word for nudity (gymnos) and was the name given to the public institution where individuals could meet and exercise. The development of both mind and body were viewed as equally important in ancient Greece and the gymnasium soon became a place of intellectual significance, and an important part of social and spiritual life. It was home to lectures and discussions on philosophy, literature, and music, and every important city had at least one
